EMPOWERING WOMEN In many rural areas, women face numerous challenges, including limited access to education, financial independence, and professional opportunities. These barriers often restrict their ability to contribute meaningfully to their families and communities. However, skill development initiatives, especially those that offer practical training, can play a transformative role in changing the lives of these women. One such initiative is Neerja Devbhumi Charitable Trust, which offers a sewing training program that has empowered many women by equipping them with valuable skills to support their families, build businesses, and gain economic independence. The Significance of Skill Development in Empowering Women In many rural areas, women face numerous challenges, including limited access to education, financial independence, and professional opportunities. At the heart of women’s empowerment lies the ability to earn a livelihood and make decisions that impact one’s life. For many women, especially in rural regions, formal education and employment opportunities are scarce. In this context, vocational training programs, such as sewing, provide a viable solution. By learning to sew, women not only gain a practical skill but also open the door to entrepreneurship, self-employment, and financial independence. The sewing training program offered by Neerja Devbhumi Charitable Trust is designed to give women the knowledge and tools they need to become self-reliant. This training enables them to create their own clothing and other products, sell these items, and generate income for themselves and their families. Furthermore, learning a marketable skill builds self-confidence and allows women to take control of their futures. Neerja Devbhumi Charitable Trust’s Sewing Training Program The Neerja Devbhumi Charitable Trust runs a comprehensive sewing training program aimed at teaching women how to make garments and other sewn items, while also providing business-related skills that can help them turn their training into profitable ventures. The course is open to women from various backgrounds, and the training is designed to accommodate all skill levels, from beginners to those looking to refine their sewing expertise. The program focuses on practical, hands-on learning and includes the following components: Sewing Machine Operation: The first essential skill taught is how to use sewing machines. Participants learn to operate both basic and advanced machines, which are crucial for creating garments efficiently and at a professional standard. Garment Creation: Women are taught to design and sew a wide variety of clothing items, such as shirts, skirts, dresses, and pants. This hands-on experience builds their skills and helps them understand different fabrics, designs, and garment construction techniques. Pattern Making: A key part of the training involves teaching women how to create patterns for garments. Pattern making is an essential skill for creating custom clothing and for scaling their work into a business. Business Skills: Beyond sewing, the program also teaches women how to manage a small business. They learn about pricing, marketing, customer interaction, and how to sell their creations. These business-oriented lessons ensure that women are not just skilled seamstresses but also capable entrepreneurs. Finishing and Detailing: Women are taught how to add professional finishes to their garments, such as hemming, pressing, and trimming, which ensures that their products are of high quality and ready for sale. By the end of the training, participants are equipped with the skills to create beautiful, professional-grade garments and the knowledge to run their own businesses. This dual approach—combining technical and business skills—ensures that women can both produce high-quality goods and sell them effectively, leading to financial independence. Transforming Lives and Creating Opportunities The impact of the sewing training program at Neerja Devbhumi Charitable Trust is both immediate and long-lasting. Many women who have completed the program have experienced a profound transformation in their lives. The most obvious benefit is the financial independence that comes from being able to earn money by creating and selling clothes. In rural communities, women often rely on their husbands or male family members for financial support. This dependence can limit their ability to make decisions, control their own futures, and contribute meaningfully to the household. By learning sewing and business skills, women gain self-sufficiency. They can support themselves, make decisions about how to use their income, and gain greater autonomy within their families. Many women who have completed the sewing training program have gone on to establish their own small businesses. Whether it is a tailoring shop or a clothing stall in a local market, these women have used their new skills to create viable sources of income for themselves and their families. Not only does this provide them with a steady income, but it also improves their social status and self-esteem. Additionally, the skills these women gain often have a ripple effect on their communities. As women start businesses, they often hire other women, providing them with income-generating opportunities as well. This helps build a network of female entrepreneurs who support each other’s growth and success. The women in the program also become role models for others in their communities, showing that women can succeed in business and have control over their economic futures. Handmade Clothes: The Product of Talent and Hard Work A key outcome of the sewing training program is the creation of handmade clothes by the women. These clothes are not just products; they are the result of countless hours of learning, practice, and dedication. Each garment reflects the creativity, skill, and hard work of the women who make them. The types of garments produced by the women vary depending on their training and market demand. They create everything from simple, everyday clothing to more elaborate and intricate designs. These garments are of high quality, thanks to the rigorous training

Impact Story

“My name is Neerja Goyal, born on February 20, 1980, in Kanpur. I am the founder of the Neerja Devbhumi Charitable Trust, and a para-badminton player. My father, the late Shri Nandkishor Goyal, and my mother, Shrimati Kusum Goyal, named me Neerja. I am the eldest in the family, followed by my brother Dev Goyal, married sister Gauri Goyal, and the youngest sister Nupur Goyal. During the eighth month of my life, a doctor administered an expired injection. Though I was born without any disabilities, within three days of the injection, I faced paralysis. It wasn’t just me; many children around me experienced the same issue due to the doctor’s negligence. When parents investigated, they discovered that the doctor had used an expired vaccine. Unfortunately, the doctor, who was treating my paralysis, took my last breath when he had already freed me from 80% paralysis. From that moment, I could never stand on my feet again, marking the beginning of my life with a disability. Despite a strong financial background, I couldn’t pursue education. At the age of five, I witnessed my father’s excessive alcohol consumption, leading to an unstable home environment. This situation hindered my early education, even though our family was complete and financially stable. Due to my father’s alcohol addiction, our family’s financial condition deteriorated, and we received no support from relatives. At the age of ten, my mother decided to leave… Due to my father’s abusive behavior, one day my mother informed me and my siblings that she was leaving. I was ten years old at the time. Since we were all afraid of our father’s actions, we pleaded with our mother not to leave. Despite the challenging financial situation, my mother had managed to open a utensil store, and as the eldest, I took it upon myself to run the family, including the store. Unfortunately, just a year later, my father passed away. The family struggled even with the store… The utensil store couldn’t sustain our family’s needs. There were times when we could only afford one meal a day. However, we never gave up hope and managed to survive, handling all responsibilities with determination. It is said, ‘God’s house may be late, but never dark.’ Eventually, the situation improved, and the store started doing well, a result of our family’s hard work. Paralysis struck again at the age of 14… Fate had something else in store for me. At the age of 14, I suffered paralysis in both legs due to an injury. I had to stay in bed for three years, and that period felt scarier than death. I constantly prayed for death. During this time, my brother managed the store. Unfortunately, just two months after my bed rest ended, my brother faced epileptic seizures, disrupting the store’s operations. Despite the challenges, I took charge again, shouldering the responsibilities. Turning the curse of disability into strength… Gradually, I connected with other differently-abled individuals in Rishikesh and surrounding areas. I realized that disability is not a curse; it can be turned into strength. I expanded beyond the store, learned to drive, learned swimming, and even picked up playing the guitar. The turning point came when I played the guitar in front of about 400 people for the first time. It earned me much praise. Starting the para-badminton journey… My journey in para-badminton began through a camp organized for differently-abled individuals. Since there were no good badminton courts in the city, my coach Jitendra Bisht taught me, and I practiced with children in the alleys. Participation and achievements in various competitions: Additionally: Neerja Goyal’s achievements and her contributions to society showcase her determination, resilience, and commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of others despite facing numerous challenges.

ALL DIVYANGJANs ARE EQUAL

In the pursuit of creating an inclusive and just society, it is imperative to focus on building a nation where all Divyanagjan (persons with disabilities) are treated with equality and dignity. The term “divyanagjan” emphasizes the unique abilities and strengths that individuals with disabilities possess, underlining the idea that they are integral contributors to the diversity and richness of our society. To achieve this vision, it is essential to implement policies and practices that promote accessibility, inclusivity, and equal opportunities for Divyanagjan in all facets of life. This encompasses education, employment, healthcare, and social participation. Providing accessible infrastructure and technology, ensuring education is tailored to diverse learning needs, and creating workplaces that accommodate and appreciate the skills of Divyanagjan are key steps in realizing this goal. Furthermore, fostering a culture of understanding and empathy is crucial. Raising awareness about the challenges faced by Divyanagjan and celebrating their achievements helps dismantle stereotypes and prejudices. By encouraging a mindset that values diversity and inclusivity, society can build bridges that unite rather than divide. Legislation and policy frameworks must also be strengthened to safeguard the rights of Divyanagjan, ensuring they have equal access to opportunities and are protected from discrimination. This involves actively engaging with Divyanagjan communities to understand their specific needs and collaborating with them to design and implement effective policies. In conclusion, building a nation where all Divyanagjan are equal requires a collective effort from government, civil society, and the public. Embracing diversity, fostering inclusivity, and championing equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities are not only moral imperatives but also essential for creating a society that thrives on the unique strengths of each of its members. By working together towards this goal, we can construct a nation where everyone, regardless of ability, can participate fully in the social, economic, and cultural life of the country.
